Black Sea

Chemical pollution and severe eutrophication are important environmental problems on the northwestern shelf of the Black Sea. High biomass microalgal blooms (leading to low oxygen levels in the water column and sediments) and microbial pathogens threaten aquaculture and tourism activities.

Recently, accumulations of cyanobacteria blooms accumulating in coastal zones have increased. Forecast systems in the Black Sea can help to explore climate scenarios combined with analysis of human pressures. CoCliME will contribute to supporting the implementation of the environmental protection launched in the early 1990s by the “Bucharest Convention against Pollution of the Black Sea”.
